Repeal Day and my birthday mix well, even if I was mostly alone. I spent the day drinking hot toddies alone due to a sore throat. (Yes, birds get sore throats.) Phlegm was coming out of every hole in my beak, and that isn't healthy for a human, let alone a bird. However, we've learned in the past few decades that alcohol solves everything, and you can't ban it, unless it makes your heart explode. You can ban it then. Business-wise: I've been out of contact and not blogging, but still I should mention I've planned out a trip to Chicago for Christmas with Andy. I'll head with him and go see my parents in downstate Illinois. They're getting ready to fly a bit south. Eagles and humans have the same instincts in this way. Labels: America, Housecleaning, Sin

Andy and I are in the throes of moving, the most American of pastimes. What is more American than dangerously over-stuffing a minivan and swerving about the highways and byways of this great nation? Moving allows you to:
I should add an addendum: moving is the most American of pastimes only if the move is to another part of America, which is exactly where we're going. Boston. We're going to Boston, where Andy will hit the books, get this website working, and get laid. Oh, and I should rediscover America instantly and feel inspired. Until we're situated in our dingy new apartment with Internet/manage to steal Wi-Fi, I'll just be on Twitter. Follow @eaglie. Labels: America, Housecleaning, Travel

I'll make this quick: we have been moving, and Andy still has me stuck in a cage under a blanket. Why this happened, I don't know. It might have been the small fires I caused while trying to move the dresser by myself. I managed to sneak this note out in a digital bottle. If this message reaches you, you are part of the Resistance. Labels: Housecleaning

So yesterday was supposed to be me and Eaglie's big State of the Aviary Address. But alas, we ran out of energy by the time we were supposed to do it. Work does that. Let me acknowledge the concerns--it's true that the Aviary has been oft neglected this past year. Fits of posting followed by lacks. But we will come out the stronger. Now is the time to put away childish things, like sleep, and get back to our posting roots. There shall be no rest from rhetoric for the feathered. I'll see to that. It is not all bad though. On this sixth anniversary of the Aviary, I have discovered new and exciting powers for Eaglie to claim. Flickr, YouTube, Twitter (something designed for a bird character if there ever was one)... all new possibilities for the Aviary to become, faster, stronger, better, and even profitable. But that can't be everything: a friend in the online publishing industry told me to worry more about content. The free Bloggers and Wordpresses may be a dime a dozen and won't let you stand out in the crowd too often, but the content of each and every post is what keeps visitors coming back. And that is what makes blogs profitable. And that model will be how the Aviary will proceed. On another note, happy birthday to avid reader Joe! I'm sure he's living it up with his birthday biscuits and tea wherever he is. And if you'd like a personalized birthday wish from the Aviary, please send a credit card number or PayPal request to Eaglie's Birthday Wish By Internet Fund! Labels: Housecleaning

Here's his first post, about a horse. And his second, about a cactus. Rand McNally is definitely working Andy to the bone, and I've been locked out of his computer. But I do have a few new pieces up my sleeve once Labels: Housecleaning

Internet's been on the fritz, and mild-mannered Andy's not around to fix it. That's because he's got himself employed again, working for a super-secret company that I totally will never ever write about on this blog (And-ray Nally-mcay? CNally-may?). I will, however, link the blog that he's working on over there. He's a terrible writer, though, as you can read. Actually, nothing of his has been posted so far. So he's an even worse writer than I thought. But still, check out the rest of Nally-mcay's site while you're on the blog! Great people, great food, great driving directions... great company all around! Definitely worth selling out to! (Remember: I am just kidding.) Labels: Housecleaning

Cabinboy1776 posted this quite a few years ago, back in the days of pre-IRC. And 4Chan has been around pretty long, too. (They've even been The Featured Article on Wikipedia.) Labels: Housecleaning

Snow hit Chicago in a big way a few days ago, and it's just gonna keep coming, so I hear from the Chicagoist and my boy Skilling. So here I am, ruffling my feathers in front of a Pentium IV for warmth, debating various horsemen (and women) of the year as well as what to put on my Christmas cards (macaroni or rigatoni?). Andy's off doing Andy stuff--probably eating Frito's Honey Barbecue Twists. Corporations are throwing contracts in roaring fireplaces, and the courts are keeping themselves warm by keeping themselves busy protecting our current favorite Illinois governor. But I have my computer and Sinatra and Cash Christmas CDs playing. I have warm coffee (not civet puke), and I have Christmas shopping and cards to do... which I sincerely enjoy doing. Something about writing by hand still thrills me. And Andy gave me the bottom half of the chips bag, so it does feel like the holidays--even if there's plenty of badness in the world as of late. Now, to watch the Muppets. Labels: Housecleaning

You know, this year is my gilded septennial. Quite a vocabulary for such a young age. I have changed a lot in these years, from simply a video game persona to a video game-affiliated blog persona and finally to whatever the hell I am now. A blog persona, a Facebook persona, and a GMail messaging persona? Not to forget, an actual eagle to boot. So, as always, thanks for reading, oft-reading Avians. There will be plenty for you in the afterlife. Labels: Housecleaning

Well, I am unjobbed, as those close to me and Eaglie have heard. Eaglie seems like an unrelenting bastard. But like any reasonable eagle, he believes in putting his wings over those he loves. I'd like to thank him for his support. And I'd like to thank friends, family, and coworkers for their thoughts and totally awesome friendships through all these years and months. One of the best parts of working at a publishing company has been the insane and OCD nerds that I've worked with, who were all so lovable to get drunk with the Friday after being laid off. I know well enough when I take a step back that I'll bounce back easily. There are people worse off than me. Heck, I still have Internet, don't I? And who knows? Maybe that first unemployment check can pay for my Christmas list...or the new electric bill in the mail today. Both Eaglie and I apologize for the very slow last two weeks. He and I will get producing new works, adventures, and sassiness again, don't you worry. Labels: Economics, Housecleaning

I'm fully back from vacation, which was one day, plus another two days' vacation from my brain. ![]() That totem is pretty dirty, even by my blog's standards. P.S. Thanks, veterans. You're pretty rad people. Labels: Housecleaning, Tribute

After ensuring Sen. Obama's presidential victory, I am heading off on a much needed two-night vacation. It's my first time leaving Chicago in weeks... in months, actually. Being "free as a bird" doesn't always refer to the actual state of things, let me tell ya. But don't worry: I'll be on the job there, defeating the purpose of a vacation and writing up a storm. I'll also take pictures. You guys like pictures. Labels: Housecleaning

Andy corrected a few things in yesterday's New Yorker piece for me with a few clarifications and predicates here and there, including a link to the Wikipedia article on the Dutch Muhammad cartoons. So reread it all! Labels: Housecleaning
